This shows an early suggestion for a Mars ship, powered by a caesium ion drive, designed by Ernst Stuhlinger. The big disk atthe top is to radiate heat from the reactor at the bottom of the handle. Note the highly unusual rocket with fins at both ends, for flying down through the atmosphere of Mars, and the 'bottle suits'.
